Buying Solar While Building a House: What to Plan Before Installation

Solar planning for a new home under construction – RSA Solar Supplier.

Planning solar while your house is still being built gives you time to think about where equipment will go, how cables will run and which appliances you want to power.

You do not need to purchase everything immediately. Start with a system plan and a budget estimate, then confirm the equipment and installation costs when the building is ready.

Start with the appliances you want to run

Make a list of your planned appliances, including fridges, freezers, lights, computers, pumps, air conditioners and electric cooking equipment.

Tell your solar supplier which appliances may run together. A system that comfortably powers lights and a fridge may need a different design if you also want to run a borehole pump, geyser or welding machine.

This information helps determine the inverter capacity, battery storage and solar panel requirements.

Plan space for the panels

Discuss the roof layout before construction is complete. Roof direction, usable space and shade from trees, chimneys or nearby buildings affect where panels can be installed.

Keep the roofing material in mind too. Tiled roofs and metal roofs use different mounting equipment.

A clear roof plan helps your supplier prepare a more accurate mounting allowance.

Choose a suitable equipment location

Allow space for the inverter, batteries and protection equipment. The location must meet the selected manufacturers’ requirements for ventilation, clearances, temperature and protection from the weather.

Consider access for maintenance and possible future expansion. Avoid squeezing the equipment into a space that leaves no room for additional batteries or safe servicing.

Discuss cable routes before finishing work

Ask your electrician and solar installer to agree on cable routes before walls, ceilings and paving are finished.

Where cables must run underground, confirm the trench route and requirements with the installer before digging. If you will provide the trench yourself, have that responsibility recorded in the quotation.

Planning these routes early can reduce disruptive work later.

Treat an early quotation as a budget estimate

An estimate helps you set money aside, but equipment prices, availability and installation requirements can change while construction continues.

Before ordering, ask for an updated quotation based on the completed building, confirmed cable distances and final equipment selection.

Check whether installation, delivery, electrical certification and any required municipal applications are included.
