Solar assessment: how much solar do you actually need?

Six quick questions. No sign-up needed. You get an instant estimate of the panels, inverter and battery you need, what it costs in rand, and roughly how much you will save on your Eskom bill every month.

How the estimate is calculated: daily usage in kWh is the sum of every appliance you add (watts × hours × quantity), divided by the daily output of one panel (0.55 kW × 5 peak sun hours × 80% system efficiency). Battery capacity is sized from your essential loads multiplied by the backup hours you want. Your final quote is confirmed after a proper site assessment.

What this tool cannot do, and what happens next

It cannot see your property

The tool works from what you tell it. It does not know your roof pitch, shading, cable run, DB board or Eskom phase. That is why every estimate is labelled as an estimate only.

A real assessment follows

Once you have your estimate, one of our team checks it against your actual property and load, then sends a written, itemised quote in rand.

Or just WhatsApp us

If you would rather talk to a person, send us a message with your town and what you want to run. We will tell you honestly whether solar is the right answer.

For farms and businesses

Most commercial and farm work starts at 50 kW because of three-phase supply, motor starting and Eskom tariff structure. If your calculated load lands below that, the tool will tell you straight and point you to our commercial team rather than underselling you.

Solar sizing questions we get every day

How many solar panels do I need for my house?

Most South African homes need between 6 and 20 panels. A 550 W panel produces roughly 2.2 kWh on a good day, so eight panels give you around 18 kWh, enough for a normal household's daytime use plus charging a battery. The calculator works this out from your actual appliances.

Do I need a battery if I only want to reduce my bill?

No. If your only goal is to cut the Eskom bill, a grid-tie system without a battery is the cheapest route, but it gives you nothing during load shedding. Most South African customers end up wanting both, which is why we size the inverter for a battery now and add it later if the budget is tight.

How many hours of backup can a battery hold?

It depends on what you keep running. A 10 kWh lithium battery comfortably runs a fridge, freezer, WiFi router, TV and some lights for 4 to 5 hours. A geyser element alone will use most of that in under an hour. Tell the calculator how many hours you want and it will size the battery around the essentials.

Will a bigger system cost less per watt?

Usually yes. Panels, inverters and installation all get cheaper per watt as the system grows, which is one of the reasons a farm-scale system makes more sense than three small residential ones.
